Care of Hanging Baskets

Supertunias- if the leaves are turning yellow, there’s either too much water or not enough fertilizer.

Fushias- do not like the hot afternoon sun.

Mandevillas- not much you can do wrong here unless you don’t give them enough sun or food.

No hanging basket likes to be kept too wet. The easiest way to tell if they need water is to lift them slightly from the bottom. If it’s light, it needs water.  (And I don’t mean letting it dry out until it’s dead).

All hanging baskets need fertilizer every 10 days or so.

Mandevillas and portulaccas are the only hanging baskets we sell that can take the baking sun when it’s 98 degrees out every day without a bit of shade. If we are in a brutal heat wave, give them some shade until the weather breaks.

If at any time you notice your hanging basket is not doing as well as it was, and you know you were giving it the right care, it could have bugs. Many bugs that attack plants are hard to see without a magnifying glass. There are many types of insects that can do great damage and can attack your plants at any time. You can always bring a sample and let me see it. If you do have insects try Ortho Systemic Insect Killer. Any bug that tries to snack on your plants will be affected. Home Depot, Lowes, any of those places carry it. Always follow directions on the container when you are applying it. The good news is recovery is very fast for the plants.

As always, feel free to call or email with any concerns you have. We want you to enjoy them for the entire season.
